Although we celebrate St. Patrick's Day where I live, it doesn't seem to have the popularity it must have elsewhere in the world. Of any of my holiday craft sub-indexes, this one has received the most visits. Hmmm, I wonder if the Leprechauns are plugged into the internet...

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S DAY

Teaching Children's rights
Most curricula include equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to becoming rounded, informed and responsible citizens in society.Learning about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is an essential aspect of learning about the legal and human rights and responsibilities underpinning society.

Children's Rights across the curriculum
Children’s rights are central to all aspects of UNICEF’s work including education. UNICEF uses the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as a framework. This ties in with work in schools in many areas of the curriculum such as citizenship and humanities. It also relates to whole school work on policy-making and building the school ethos.

Panflet
A two colour leaflet produced specially for use in schools, classrooms and youth clubs. It summarises in pictures and accessible language 42 articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Classroom Activities
Wide range of classroom activities.

Assessment Pack
A 20 page document with ideas for teacher assessment, recording and reporting on pupils' learning on children's rights across the age ranges.

'Wants' and 'Needs' Games
Play our Wants and Needs game to find out how good you are at distinguishing between a want and a need. Think about what things you need in order to survive, develop, to be protected and to be included. Whilst you have rights, sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between a want and a need. You NEED to express your opinion, but you WANT a mobile phone. Or do you need a mobile phone if you want to express your opinion?

'Wants' and 'Needs' Game - Play Cards
Wants and Needs Cards' appear in many of our resources as photocopiable pages and are now available as a pdf download (662kb). There are 20 illustrated cards and a set of activities on eight A4 pages. Suitable for 8 to 16 year olds.

Cross-curricular activities
Children’s Rights and related issues of responsibilities, participation, democracy and global citizenship are cross-curricular in nature. Many UNICEF education resources can be used in a very cross-curricular way which may suit your school environment and style of teaching.

Lessons plans to teach Children's Rights
This series of lessons is suitable for use in Year 4 and Year 5 (8 - 10 year olds)
